In light of the first two episodes of season 2, a lot of people were huge fans of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman. It was a stark contrast to Henry Cavill’s Superman, as it was a lighter rendition and more along the lines of the Silver Age/Christopher Reeve Superman. To me personally, I thought he was okay. I didn’t like the suit very much, and he just seemed like a discount Reeve without any of the charm or charisma. However, he did work within the world of the show and worked well with Benoist. After he left the show in episode 2, many people were hoping for a spin-off with Hoechlin, but the CW president decided to give that rumor/hope a rest:
Tyler did a great job. There’s no plan to do a series. There are no plans at the moment for him to return [to Supergirl]. If they wish to have him return, we’d love to have him.
While it is 100% certain that he won’t return for remainder of season 2, there is a chance he could return in season 3 and/or season 4. It is very unlikely that he will get a spin-off far into the future or even at all, as Smallville just ended 6 years ago, and we still have Cavill’s portrayal in the DCEU. Plus, I don’t think there is a high enough demand for a show anyway because many people that enjoyed his appearance didn’t think he warranted a spin off. He had his time to shine, but the focus is Supergirl this time.
Supergirl will be premiering Monday, January 23rd.
