Supergirl: Laura Benanti Exits, CW Recasts Alura Zor-El

Out of almost nowhere, recurring cast member of season 1 and 2 Laura Benanti exits Supergirl. She played Supergirl’s mother, Alura as well as her sister, Astra. These characters were more so used in season 1 than season 2 with clocking in 9 episodes of season 1 and 1 episode of season 2. The reason for leaving was the fact that she had major commitments in New York and couldn’t trek all the way to Vancouver for filming. Adding onto the fact her character was used only once in season 2, it looked like a pretty easy decision to leave the show. However, the more interesting fact is that she was recast with Smallville alum, Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane. While it is rather interesting that yet another cast member from another Superman related property has entered the Supergirl universe, it makes us question, why recast in the first place? She was used once in season 2 (a role I personally don’t even remember) in episode 4. Why would they even need to recast? The theory is is that she will be a major part of season 3. It would make sense since the villain is once again from Krypton, there could be plenty of flashbacks from Krypton that are utilized with Durance. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Supergirl is set to premiere on Monday, October 9th.
